The Roman Mosaic-floored Edifice

The expression of greatness of Tomis port (town)

The building, erected probably towards the end of II century AD, was enlarged and amplified in later centuries. The floor was done in the fourth century and the whole assembly, with subsequent repairs, worked until the early seventh century. A portion of 850 sqm from the pavement was kept. Terrace A represents the ancient place for living and terrace C is the level of storage rooms (11 rooms with vaulted ceiling). At the same level, in continuation of the building, there are a series of rooms that served as workshops. Terrace D is the other warehouse for storing goods, located just in front of the ancient port quays and is now below sea level. The connection between the terraces was made through a staircase with large and tall limestone stairs. The museum hosts collections of goods from the ships, found in the warehouses of the building: anchors, bars, weights, amphorae with painting and resins, statuettes, collections of lamps, marble tiles, polychrome mosaic, pillar heads. In the former warehouses epigraphic monuments, found in different centers of Dobrogea, are exposed.
